Cultural events in Mijas Pueblo include for example weekly Flamenco Shows which are held every Tuesday (except of the months of July and August). When visiting this show you can not only enjoy the wonderful and traditional dance and music but also have a glass of Malaga wine. The event takes place on the main square and is visited by both Spanish people and tourists alike.
Festivals, processions, celebrations and other events are held throughout the year. The Three Kings parade is only one of them. Every year on the 6th of January three men dress up as the three kings and throw sweets to the excited children that are following them. It is the Spanish Christmas and usually presents are not given until this date. Another festival that is important not only in Mijas but also anywhere else in Spain is the Carnival which is held in February. Fancy dress parties, the election of a carnival queen and parades make this celebration a great experience.
For Spanish people the most important time during the year is Easter. Tourists will be impressed by the magnificent processions that take place throughout the day and the Easter week. The most imposing statues are carried through the streets in Mijas and tell the story of Christ. It is a very serious procession with parades in nearly every town in the area. Should you have time then we strongly recommend visiting the city of Malaga during the Easter week as this is where the largest statues make their way to the churches. Carried by hundreds of men, statues show not only Christ on the cross but also Maria and other scenes. During this time of the year the city is crowded with locals and tourists which usually do not leave until the early morning hours.
In June there is the celebration of San Juan. With drinks, good food, dances and fireworks San Juan is celebrating the summer solstice. People often go for a dip in the sea or at least hold their feet in it as it is said to bring good luck for the coming year. July and August also have a variety of cultural events on offer. The Flamenco Dance Festival, the Spanish Theatre Festival and the Latin American Night make the town's main square to a lively place full of laughter and music.
September each year (normally around the 8th) brings the Annual Mijas Fair. It is another week of true Spanish celebration in honour of the Patron Saint of Mijas, The Virgin of the Rock. Yet again the Spanish concentrate on having fun, the main square is set up with bars and stalls where there is plenty of food and drink for all. Horses are decorated and the locals dress in traditional flamenco dress.
